Resources For Childcare Workers

Ofsted Registration.

Nannies do not have to legally register with Ofsted but can choose to join on the voluntary part of the childcare register.

To register you will need.

  • Paediatric first aid certificate that is in date.
  • DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) that is less then three months old or on the update system.
  • Public liability insurance

The cost of being Ofsted registered is £103 and takes up to 12 weeks to process your application.

Nannies’ employers can receive help from the tax-free childcare scheme. Please see our employment page for more information on the tax-free childcare scheme.

Paediatric First Aid Course.

In contrast, for nannies it is not a legal requirement to do so unless you want to be Ofsted registered. However, some parents may ask it to be required when advertising a nanny position.

A paediatric first aid course for Ofsted to accept is a 12-hour long course and is split between two days, doing six hours each day.

You have the choice to do two days in a class with a professional instructor or a blend of 6 hours online learning and 6 hours practical learning with a professional instructor.

You will learn lifesaving skills that could be used to save the life of an infant or child in an emergency.

The price for a course is around £80 to £100 depending on who you book your course with.

At the end of the course when you pass you will receive a certificate that is valid for three years.

Enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service).

The DBS was previously known as the CRB (Criminal Record Checks). You need a DBS that is in date or on the update system to be a nanny or a childminder in the UK. This is to  ensure children are safe whilst in the care of your hands and also to prove you have not committed or been involved in any offences with the law.

An Enhanced DBS currently cost £69.80 in the UK; Ofsted will only accept a certificate if its less than three months old. Alternatively, you can join the Update system.

The update system allows your Enhanced DBS to always be up to date and employers can check your certificate too. This only cost £16.00 a year.

Public Liability Insurance

Public Liability Insurance is to protect Nannies in their workplace.

Unfortunately, personal injury, damage to property, or an accident can happen whilst the children are in your care and can result in damage to your career as a nanny or your childminding business.

Insurance is around £70.00 a year depending what company you go with to be insured.
